Knee replacement (arthroplasty) surgeries

We normally use our knees unwittingly in our daily lives. The most important reason of this is our healthy cartilage tissues covering the joint forming surfaces of our bones. Two healthy cartilage tissues slide on each other 3 times easier than two ice blocks sliding on each other. Unfortunately, cartilage tissues with very low friction coefficients in health joints, are not capable for self-healing. Unfortunately, a damage or degeneration emerging in cartilage tissues has the tendency to progress. 

In case of abrasion of the cartilage tissue, it results with exposure of the underlying bonny tissue with a improper surface and thus abrasion of the cartilage tissue to the opposite surface. In later stages, the situation that emerges as the result of friction between two bone surfaces is called arthritis. State of arthritis emerging in the knee is called gonarthritis. The knee has three compartments which are the medial, lateral and anterior compartments. Arthritis may occur in one, two or three compartments. 

People with arthritis may have significant limitations in their lives. People feel severe pain especially while starting moving after stagnancy. It is like their freedom of movement is grabbed.

Basically, there are three types of arthritis and treatment methods that are generally preferred after middle age are as follows.

Local cartilage tissue loss at femur bone and preservation of more than 50% of meniscuses: Surface covering prosthesis (arthroplasties)

Arthritis in one or two compartments: Partial prosthesis (arthroplasties) (unicompartmental arthroplasties)

Arthritis in two or three compartments: Total knee Prosthesis (Arthroplasty)

In consideration of the fact that it is necessary to remove bone with the volume equal to the size of the prosthesis in every prosthesis surgery, the smallest prosthesis suitable for the condition of the arthritis in the knee, must be preferred. 

It is possible to apply partial prosthesis after surface covering prosthesis and total prosthesis after the partial prosthesis. Today, partial prosthesis is made with robotic technology.
